There has always been a series of cases in American that have changed the political system of the nation. Some of these cases include the 1857 Dred Scott versus Stanford, the 1954 Brown versus Board of Education and the 1973 Roe versus Wade cases and so on. These court rulings have continuous consequences that are still felt to date. They also introduced permanent changes to the political system of the United States. The case between Citizens United and Federal Election Commission began in 2008 when Citizens United aired a one-hour-long movie to tarnish the name of Hillary Clinton during the Democratic Party primaries. The Federal Election Commission realized that the movie was a campaign ad against Hillary. Citizens United refused to reveal the group that funded the ad although the federal laws required such financiers to be identified.

End Citizens United then sued FEC to have the ruling in their favor. However, the federal court ruled in favor of FEC and upheld their decisions. Two years later, the Supreme Court overturned the ruling that toppled the laws regarding campaign funding laws in the country. People, especially professional realized that the new rules and amendments put in place by the Citizens United were intense. The rules permitted corporate campaign contributions to be anonymous and unlimited. This would lead to an increase in television and radio ads aimed at tarnishing the names of political candidates. The Republican Party was clearly favored by Citizens United because it had close relationships with wealthy and influential people in America. PAC founded End Citizens United to work together with organizations like ACLU and League of Women Voters to end the ruling by Citizens United.

End Citizens United Backs Doug Jones For US Senate

There has been a fundamental assault on the voting rights of American citizens for the better part of the past decade and most American voters aren’t even aware it is happening. We are, of course, talking about the Supreme Court decision regarding Citizens United.

Led by lawyer James Bopp, Citizens United is a right wing committee that was created in order to help push for more dark money and special interests in the realm of politics. Citizens United argued before the Supreme Court in 2010 that corporations were people and that their monetary donations were simply an expression of free speech. Does an oil company giving $5 million to a politician’s PAC in order to sway their vote on energy sound fair to you? It doesn’t and it isn’t. End Citizens United is a grassroots campaign to fight back against the Citizens United decision and their work is taking on renewed importance in 2017.

End Citizens United was established with the sole goal of undoing the damage done by the Citizens United decision. The PAC is currently presided over by Tiffany Muller and their focus in 2017 is to raise enough money to make a difference in the upcoming Congressional Elections. In 2017, responding to the election of Donald Trump, End Citizens United has managed to bring in an extraordinary amount of donations. Muller points out that moderates and progressives alike are enraged by the way that Trump has behaved thus far in office. Still, grassroots donations only help if they are applied correctly.

End Citizens United knows that in order to make change at the highest levels of government they need to put legislators in office that are willing to champion and campaign for campaign finance reform. That is why End Citizens United has gotten into the habit of backing progressive politicians whoa re willing to go to battle against the Citizens United decision. This past week we saw End Citizens United back up Doug Jones, a former United States Attorney who is running against Roy Moore in the Alabama Special Election this December 12th. End Citizens United proudly announced their decision to back up Jones in his campaign.

Doug Jones has been a progressive figure for years and he was a big part of bringing members of the KKK responsible for a Baptist Church bombing to justice. Jones stands for campaign finance reform and turning the tide of racism and bigotry flooding into America. Jones was vocal about his condemnation for Roy Moore who seems to be an extension of Donald Trump’s own firebrand rhetoric. Jones also condemned Moore for his close ties to special interests and dark money flooding into the world of politics, something he vows to fight against.
